Our Advent Journey - Day 4 - Addiction
10 days of Advent A series of ten articles in preparation for Christmas. We set out to meet the Lord and be prepared. Day 4. Hope for the future - Addiction - Trust in God
We are all suffering from some addiction or other. Some are completely harmless, some like alcohol, gambling and drugs are extremely dangerous.
So dangerous that they may lead to despair and even suicidal thoughts. All hope is lost.
Always remember no matter what we have done, no matter how alone we feel Jesus loves us and complete trust in Him is the key to life and a better future.
In our website theworldofourlord.com we feature in the HOME page a novena which comes from the living experience of Jesus in the prayer life of Father Dolindo Ruotolo. It is also featured on our smartphone app. (Full details on the above site on how to obtain the app totally free). It is a powerful prayer of surrender to Christ and having faith to completely let go of worries, addictions, anxieties etc.
It can even be summed up in eleven words
O Jesus I surrender Myself to You,
Jesus You take care of everything.
Do not be afraid to let go. Jesus loves you. Close the eyes of your soul, turn away from thoughts of tribulation and put yourself in His care.
If you do this, honestly and sincerely - He will not fail you.
Prayer for those weighted down by addiction
Oh Lord, I come to You to pray for all who are weighed down with some form of addiction. Lord, You are the One Who came to set the captives free and to release the sinners from the chains that bind them – so I lift before Your throne of grace all those that have become addicted to drugs. Lord I know some personally and others that I know nothing about – but You know everyone that is enchained by the curse of drug-addiction. Look with compassion on all that are ensnared by any form of addiction and send help and freedom to all who would accept help. Lord I pray so that they may be released from this imprisonment and returned to a life that has dignity and meaning. Give wisdom to their family members and those that care from them that they may be given the support and help to put them back on the road to recovery. Endow them with patience, understanding and perseverance, knowing that this can take time to address. More than anything Lord I pray for their Salvation. You died for every drug addict and it was Your love for them that caused You to die on the cross of shame that they might be lifted up and seated with Christ in heavenly places… Amen
“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” (1 Corinthians 15:57)
Today dear Lord help all those who are depressed,
or who suffer problems as a result of addiction
Help them to know that even in the deepest despair
That you are there, waiting for them
Let them see your love and the knowledge that You are there for them always.
TODAY is 19 December
I welcome everything that comes to me today because I know it's for my healing. I let go of my desire for power and control. I open to the love and presence of God and God's action within. And I pray that I love all others for His names sake. Amen.
St Joseph, our patron Saint. Like Mary he accepted the will of the Holy Spirit and devoted himself completely to trusting God. We pray that we too have or share this tremendous trust and faith which Joseph had in God and his devotion to both Jesus and Mary.
WORD OF OUR LORD
Luke 1:5-25 - 'Your wife Elizabeth will bear a son'
In the days of King Herod of Judaea there lived a priest called Zechariah who belonged to the Abijah section of the priesthood, and he had a wife, Elizabeth by name, who was a descendant of Aaron. Both were worthy in the sight of God, and scrupulously observed all the commandments and observances of the Lord. But they were childless: Elizabeth was barren and they were both getting on in years.
Now it was the turn of Zechariah’s section to serve, and he was exercising his priestly office before God when it fell to him by lot, as the ritual custom was, to enter the Lord’s sanctuary and burn incense there. And at the hour of incense the whole congregation was outside, praying.
Then there appeared to him the angel of the Lord, standing on the right of the altar of incense. The sight disturbed Zechariah and he was overcome with fear. But the angel said to him, ‘Zechariah, do not be afraid, your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth is to bear you a son and you must name him John. He will be your joy and delight and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord; he must drink no wine, no strong drink. Even from his mother’s womb he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, and he will bring back many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God. With the spirit and power of Elijah, he will go before him to turn the hearts of fathers towards their children and the disobedient back to the wisdom that the virtuous have, preparing for the Lord a people fit for him.’
Zechariah said to the angel, ‘How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is getting on in years.’ The angel replied, ‘I am Gabriel who stand in God’s presence, and I have been sent to speak to you and bring you this good news. Listen! Since you have not believed my words, which will come true at their appointed time, you will be silenced and have no power of speech until this has happened.’ Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah and were surprised that he stayed in the sanctuary so long. When he came out he could not speak to them, and they realised that he had received a vision in the sanctuary. But he could only make signs to them, and remained dumb.
When his time of service came to an end he returned home. Some time later his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept to herself. ‘The Lord has done this for me’ she said ‘now that it has pleased him to take away the humiliation I suffered among men.’
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
Allow God to love you. Just open your heart and receive. Never believe you are beyond the reach of God’s Love. Even in your worst moments he is as close as your next breath. May the Lord help us open our hearts to his presence this very hour. Amen
Always Remember - JESUS LOVES YOU
The Dawn from on high will visit us,
guiding our feet in the way of peace.
Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in our hour of conflict. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.
Only in God is my soul at rest. In Him comes my salvation.
We finish as we begun
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
